Elgin

The elegant county town of Moray has a history stretching back hundreds of years. The ancient cobbled marketplace is a must-see, as is the magnificent ruined 13th century cathedral, once known to its contemporaries as “The Lantern of the North”. The ruins of Spynie Palace, residence of the Bishops of Moray since the 14th century, offer wonderful views over Spynie Loch. It is a short drive to Lossiemouth and a choice of the west beach with its lighthouse or the east beach which is reached by a bridge over the River Lossie and extends for miles towards Spey Bay.

Elgin and its environs are home to seven distilleries including Glen Moray, with its Visitor Centre.  Gordon & Macphail, the legendary whisky specialist shop and fine range of quality produce, is well worth a visit.  Johnstons Cashmere is a must on most itineraries with the chance to browse and buy from some of their exclusive ranges of clothing and accessories. There are regular tours of Johnstons’ Wool Mill and its new Heritage Centre and Coffee Shop are open daily

Numerous accommodation options are available in and around Elgin ranging from larger hotels to intimate Bed and Breakfasts.
